When a person passes away, their legal heirs and family will handle the formalities, that is the management of the deceased person’s Aadhaar card and PAN card. This article will give detailed steps to surrendering a PAN card and dealing with a person’s Aadhaar card after death.
A PAN card or the Permanent Account Number is a unique number issued by the Income Tax Department of India. A PAN card acts as an identity proof of a person. All tax information of a person is recorded on the PAN card.
A PAN card is necessary for various financial transactions like tax filing, opening bank accounts, and doing large financial transactions. It is necessary to surrender a person’s PAN card upon their death to ensure and avoid potential misuse of the PAN card.
An Aadhaar card is a 12-digit identification number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). An Aadhaar card acts as an identification proof of individuals. It is mandatory for all citizens of India to have their own Aadhaar card. It eliminates fake identities and can also be used to access all government schemes and programmes.
An Aadhaar card does not have an official procedure to deactivate upon a person’s death unline PAN cards. However, it is important to update all records to prevent any misuse of the deceased person’s Aadhaar card.
Upon a person’s death, follow these steps to surrender their PAN card.
Collect the following documents.
Death certificate.
A copy of the PAN card.
Identity proof of the deceased person’s legal heir.
Write a letter to the Assessing Officer of the Income Tax Department, including the details of the deceased person and a request to surrender their PAN card.
Submit the surrender letter with the required documents to the Income Tax Office.
Follow up with the Income Tax office to ensure that the PAN card has been successfully surrendered and deactivated.
Unlike the PAN card, there is no official procedure to be followed to deactivate a person’s Aadhaar card. However, the legal heirs or representatives must inform the authorities about the holder’s death.
Inform the banks where the deceased person had their accounts.
Inform the deceased person’s insurance company.
Inform the Government agencies providing pensions and other benefits.
The legal heirs or representatives of the deceased person must ensure that all records and accounts linked to the Aadhaar card are updated to prevent theft and misuse of the Aadhaar number.
It is also recommended to keep the Aadhaar card of the deceased person safe as it might be needed for any future verifications or legal requirements.
Surrendering the PAN card and Aadhaar card is important to ensure no theft or misuse takes place. The legal heirs or representatives of the deceased person can follow the mentioned steps and will help to keep all documents and accounts of the deceased person safe.
