In India, travelling via flights has become very common. Around 4 lakh people travel by air in one day in India, so it is important to know the rules and regulations set by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to ensure safety for all passengers.
DGCA has a set of rules allowing passengers to carry a limited quantity of alcohol on flights. Following these rules will make travel easier and stress-free, so make sure to read all the rules to avoid any consequences at the airport.
Rules For Carrying Alcohol On Flights
Knowing these rules are mandatory for all to avoid any last minute disturbances and hassle. Let’s have a look at all the rules and regulations appointed by DGCA for carrying alcohol in flights.

Carry-On Luggage
The DGCA strictly advises passengers not to carry alcohol in their carry-on luggage. The passengers will carry the carry-on luggage, and since passengers cannot consume alcohol on flights it is better to not put it in their carry-on luggage.
However, each airline has its own rules regarding carrying luggage on flights. Air India does not allow its passengers to carry alcohol, whereas SpiceJet allows its passengers to carry alcohol purchased from the airport. IndiGo allows its passengers to carry alcohol that is not more than one litre. Since many airlines have different rules, it is important to check with the airlines before deciding to carry alcohol.

Duty-Free Purchases
Passengers who have purchased alcohol from duty-free shops inside the airport are allowed to carry them on board. The only condition is that the bottles must be in unopened packaging and must be placed in the passenger’s carry-on luggage.
The DGCA has strictly mentioned that the alcohol purchased inside the airport must be for personal consumption only. No alcohol is allowed to be served to passengers on board and is completely the responsibility of the airline to ensure and enforce this.

Domestic Flights
Passengers cannot carry alcohol in their carry-on luggage for domestic flights. If passengers wish to carry alcohol on a domestic flight, then it must be packed properly and put in the checked luggage.

Quantity
Passengers can carry up to five litres of alcoholic beverages for domestic flights. This varies from airline to airline, but it is mostly up to five litres per person and is subject to certain conditions. These conditions depend on the alcohol content percentage the beverages contain.

Alcohol Content Percentage
Passengers are allowed to carry up to five litres of alcohol but they have to follow a few conditions.
The alcohol content percentage must be between 24% and 70% alcohol. The DGCA strictly prohibits passengers from carrying alcohol containing more than 70% alcohol content. However, beverages containing less than 24% alcohol content have no limit, that is, passengers can carry however many bottles of beverages containing 24% alcohol content, given that they do not exceed the weight limit.

Packaging
Passengers should ensure that the beverage bottles are sealed in plastic bags with a maximum capacity of one litre. These bags should be around 20.5cm x 20.5cm or 25cm x 15cm.
Airlines that allow passengers to carry alcohol in their carry-on luggage have one condition. The beverage must be packed in Security Evident Bags (STEB).
