The Indian farmer has always played a pivotal role in nation-building by ensuring food security. However, many small and marginal farmers struggle with low incomes and debt. To provide financial support to farmers and alleviate their hardships, the Government of India launched the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-Kisan) Yojana or Prime Minister's Farmer Reward Programme. The PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana was launched on February 24, 2019. However, to extend the benefits to more people, the government brought it into effect from December 01, 2018. The scheme seeks to provide financial support to farmers to help them lead a better life.
The PM Kisan Samman Nidhi yojana has benefited 107 million farmers across India so far and is aiming to extend its benefits to more and more farmers worthy of it.

The PM Kisan scheme is a unique scheme for farmers with several objectives. Some of them are as follows:
Provide minimum income support to farmers: PM Kisan aims to provide over 120 million farmers with a minimum assured income of Rs. 6,000 per year in three equal instalments to minimise economic risks at the household level.
Prevent Farm Distress: By supplementing farmers' incomes, the scheme intends to reduce the effect of distress caused by crop failures, market fluctuations and natural calamities.
Promote Social Inclusion: The scheme aims to cover farmers across all states, including small and marginal holders who may have been excluded from government welfare measures earlier.

The eligibility criteria for the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme are just one, and that is all farmers who own cultivable land are avail the scheme’s benefits.
Many farmers are not eligible for the benefits of this government scheme for farmers. They are:
Former and present holders of constitutional posts
Former and present Ministers/ State Ministers and former/present Members of LokSabha/ RajyaSabha/ State Legislative Assemblies/ State Legislative Councils, former and present Mayors of Municipal Corporations, former and present Chairpersons of District Panchayats.
All serving or retired officers and employees of Central/ State Government Ministries /Offices/Departments and its field units, Central or State PSEs and Attached offices /Autonomous Institutions under Government, as well as regular employees of the Local Bodies (Excluding Multi Tasking Staff /Class IV/Group D employees)
All superannuated/retired pensioners whose monthly pension is Rs 10,000/-or more (Excluding Multi Tasking Staff / Class IV/Group D employees) of the above category
All Persons who paid Income Tax in the last assessment year
Professionals like Doctors, Engineers, Lawyers, Chartered Accountants, and Architects registered with Professional bodies and carry out their profession by undertaking practices.

The application procedure to gain benefits of the Kisan Samman Nidhi or PM-KISAN scheme can be carried out through Common Service Centres (CSCs). The steps are given below:
Step 1: The executive at the CSC will fill in the complete details of the farmer registration details like State, district, subdistrict block, and village, key in the Aadhaar number, Name of the beneficiary, category, Bank detail, Land Registration ID, and Date of birth as printed on the Aadhaar card for authentication..
Step 2: The executive will fill in the Land details like Survey/ Khata No., Khasra no., and area of land as mentioned in the land holding papers.
Step 3: Upload the supporting documents like Land, Aadhar, and Bank passbook.
Step 4: After saving the application form, the executive will ask you to make a payment.
Step 5: One can complete the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi check process or PM Kisan Yojana list through their Aadhaar number.
