People relocating from state to state often face problems with registration of the vehicles and other vehicle rules. Another problem with the relocation of vehicles was that many times criminals fled using fake number plates or such vehicles were misappropriated. The government of India brought the Bharat Series Number Plates system to replace the older rules and promote seamless verification processes. Let us find out the details about BH number plates!
Bharat series number plates are meant especially for people relocating for jobs or other legal purposes. They are ordinarily known as BH number plates. The BH series plates were launched in 2021 by the Ministry of Roads, Transport and Highways. It simplifies the process of re-registration for working professionals and helps the authorities in verifying and cracking down duplicate number plates.
The number plates are only needed or valid for vehicles apart from transport vehicles such as trucks and cargo carriers.
The BH series number plates have dual-sided benefits for both working professionals and the state authorities. Let us look at their benefits in detail!
Time-Saving: Since people do not have to get their vehicle re-registered in every state they move to, due to the unification of the registration process, it saves a lot of time for both the government. It helps in vehicle registration for relocating professionals.
Ease of Identification: The BH series number plates make it easy for authorities to identify the owner of the vehicle. This helps in cases of theft, medical emergencies like accidents, etc.
Prevention of Duplicacy: These number plates help in recognising illicit or duplicate number plates and prevent their occurrence. The plates come with a chip that can help in accessing the data of the owner and verification can be done.
Cost Saving: It is a one-time registration process which saves the money spent in re-registration processes. Re-registration of vehicles involves road tax, fees and documentation charges which are averted through these number plates.
The fees that are charged for the BH Series number plates installation depend on the cost of the car and road tax paid. The percentages are given in the roster below:
Vehicle Invoice Cost | BH Series number plate cost (% of the vehicle invoice cost) |
---|---|
Vehicles cost less than ₹10 lakhs | 8% |
Vehicle cost ₹10 to ₹20 lakhs | 10% |
Vehicles cost more than ₹20 lakhs | 12% |
The fees payable can be calculated using the formula and method shown below: |
Formula:
Motor Vehicle Tax for Two Years = (Tax as per Invoice Price × 1.25 × 2) / 15
Example:
Let's say you have a vehicle with an invoice price of Rs 8 lakh (below Rs 10 lakh category):
Base tax rate is 8% for vehicles below Rs 10 lakh.
Base Tax = 8% × 8,00,000 = 0.08 × 8,00,000 = 64,000 Rs
Motor Vehicle Tax for Two Years = (64,000 × 1.25 × 2) / 15
= 1,60,000 / 15 = 10,666.67
So, For a vehicle with an invoice price of Rs. 8 lakh, the BH-Series motor vehicle tax is Rs. 10,667 every two-years.
It is important to note that there is an additional charge of 2% for diesel vehicles and a 2% reduction for electric vehicles. Private vehicle owners pay road tax payments every 2 years or every 4, 6 or 8 years (multiples of 2).
