The Educational Loan Scheme was introduced by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MSJ&E) under the Indian Government. The scheme was introduced mainly for the benefit of people from the Safai Karamchari communities, or manual scavengers, and their dependents. As the name of the student loan scheme India suggests, it aims to provide low-interest, affordable loans to people so that they can pursue educational courses from recognised universities, either established within India or outside India.
The scheme’s ultimate objective is to encourage people to fulfil their educational milestones, build a secure life for themselves and their families, and not get stopped by factors like monetary restraints.
The student loan scheme India provides loans to people pursuing only the approved courses. The list of those courses is as follows:
Professional or technical educational courses.
Educational courses in the field of medicine, engineering, management, law, and software.
Graduation in disciplines, like Arts (B.A), Commerce (B.Com), and Science (B.Sc).
Job-specific courses for a minimum duration of a year.
Diploma courses in various fields, like physiotherapy, pathology, nursing, geriatric care, hotel management, tourism, journalism, and mass communication.
Doctorate in language-related fields, master’s level courses, like MCA.
This low interest education loan scheme for people comes with numerous benefits. Some of its major and popular benefits are described below in detailed points:
Financial assistance provided under the low interest education loan scheme comprises various components, like admission and tuition fees, stationery fees concerning books and other instruments, examination fees, and accommodation-related expenses.
The most fundamental and popular benefits of this scheme are the financial assistance it provides to the eligible beneficiaries. Loans are provided at a very low rate of interest so that repayment can be easy and not financially burdensome. The breakdown of the exact loan amount and interest rate is shown below in tabular format:
| Location of studying | Amount of the financial assistance for sanitation workers | Interest charged on the loan |
|---|---|---|
| Studying within India | Rs 10 lakh. | 2 to 6% (0.5% annual rebate for women candidates studying within India). |
| Studying outside India | Rs 20 lakh. | 3 to 7% (0.5% annual rebate for women candidates studying within India). |
Note that the interest levied on the loans taken by people to study from a recognised educational institute in India is reimbursed by the Ministry of Education. The only condition here is that the annual income of the beneficiary’s family should not be more than Rs 4.5 lakh.
The rest of the beneficiaries of the scheme who took a loan to study at an educational institute situated outside of India need to start repaying the loan 5 years after the end of the educational course. This gives them plenty of time to look for and secure a job and become stable before worrying about the repayment of the loan.
On the other hand, the repayment of interest accumulated on the loan is required to be paid by the beneficiary quarterly from the date of the disbursement of the loan. This provision has been made by the authorities to ensure that the accumulated amount of the loan never reaches the level where it may seem impossible to repay.
