The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) is now getting ready to change the game regarding PF withdrawals by integrating automated teller machine (ATM) withdrawals. Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya declared the revision of EPFO 3.0, which will attempt to facilitate fund access while minimising reliance on the employer and EPFO branches.

Key Highlights of EPFO 3.0

You can withdraw PF savings directly from ATMs anytime or anywhere.

There is no longer any need to get approval from an employer or visit the EPFO offices.

PF claims can now be processed more quickly, with instant disbursals.

With multi-factor authentication, security is greatly enhanced.
How Will PF Withdrawals via ATM Work?
To achieve this seamless withdrawal system, the EPFO is working on improving its IT systems to operate like a banking network. This is how it is expected to function:
1. IT System Upgrade
The Ministry aims to upgrade EPFO’s technology architecture to allow for faster PF withdrawals. Subscribers no longer have to go through a lengthy process of claim filing and waiting for funds to be released.
2. Direct Access Through ATMs

An ATM-compatible system will be set up for the linking of PF accounts by EPFO.

Subscribers can withdraw their PF using the UAN or through the linked bank account.
3. Secure Authentication Process
Withdrawals will require Multi-step Verification, which may include:

One-time password confirmation relayed to the registered mobile number.

More security features were added for fraud control and validation compliance with the EPFO regulation.
4. Instant Fund Disbursal

The goal here is to allow for real-time transactions to be done with no waiting time attached.

As of now, PF withdrawals take 2 to 3 business days when processed using NEFT or RTGS. With this improvement, the whole procedure will be instantaneous.
UPI-Based EPF Withdrawals Also In The Works
EPFO is working on UPI integration so that members can also withdraw funds using Provident Fund (PF) via UPI apart from ATM withdrawals.
How Will UPI Integration Benefit EPFO Members?

Improved Speed: PF withdrawals will be credited instantly instead of 2-3 days for interbank transfers via NEFT or RTGS.

Direct Access: Fund access will be allowed through PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, and BHIM.

Ease of Transactions: Claim submissions will have no paperwork or long waiting periods for authorisation.
Currently, EPFO is negotiating with the NPCI to complete the integration. The new system that allows the use of UPI for payments is expected to be available for use in 2-3 months.
