The government has introduced new guidelines to address coaching centres' deceptive practices, especially false claims about guaranteed success or job security. These measures aim to protect students and ensure transparency, following a rise in complaints reported through the National Consumer Helpline.
Consumer Affairs Secretary, Nidhi Khare, explained that the guidelines focus on helping students make informed decisions and maintaining ethical advertising standards in the coaching industry. Since the launch of these rules, authorities have already issued penalties worth ₹54.60 lakh against violators.
The new guidelines prohibit coaching centres from making misleading claims in their advertisements. These rules aim to ensure transparency about the services offered.
No Misleading Claims: Coaching centres cannot claim 100% selection rates or guaranteed job security. All information regarding courses, faculty qualifications, and fee structures must be accurate and clear.
Truthful Advertising: Information about course duration, refund policies, and job guarantees must be honest and not mislead students.
Definition of Coaching: The term ‘coaching’ now includes academic guidance, study programs, and tuition. Activities like counselling, sports, or creative fields are excluded.
To prevent misuse of students' success stories, the guidelines specify clear boundaries.
Written Consent Required: Coaching centres are not allowed to use the names, photographs, or endorsements of successful candidates without obtaining their written consent after selection.
Prominent Disclaimers: All coaching institutes must display disclaimers and essential information about their courses, ensuring students understand the offerings better.
The guidelines also advise students to independently verify the claims made by coaching centres. For example, many candidates preparing for exams like UPSC clear the prelims and mains without full-time coaching and only seek support for interview preparation. Prospective students are encouraged to check the exact nature of the coaching taken by successful candidates.
These rules are not designed to target or penalise coaching centres but to safeguard students’ interests. By promoting transparency and fairness, the government aims to improve trust between coaching institutes and their students.
The guidelines implemented are a move to introduce some order to the coaching business such that students are given the right facts and not exploited. It is recommended that students seek out all the facts before signing up for any coaching programs to clarify their choices.
