The government of India introduces updates and changes in the existing systems to keep up with the times and for the betterment of people and one such change was introduced in the Permanent Account Number (PAN) card services. Recently, the government of India has introduced some key changes and updates in the existing PAN & TAN services making it PAN 2.0 to smoothen the operations concerning PAN &TAN and make it more efficient and safe.
However, there have been reports of people having duplicate or double PAN cards for which the authorities have also established some punishable measures. These measures aim to eliminate such PAN cards so that the system's integrity remains safe and secure.
Some major changes that have been introduced under the freshly launched PAN 2.0 are mentioned below:
Unified Platform: There will be a single platform for both, PAN and TAN (Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number).
Paperless: The government is working toward its commitment to turning from paper to digital in many aspects of the country. Digital systems ensure quick, convenient, and accurate working of PAN.
QR Codes: Under PAN 2.0, PAN cards will have a QR code that will help people carry out all PAN-related functions such as accessing data of the cardholder, verification process, etc. simply through a scan.
Quick e-PAN Generation: People applying for PAN cards for the first time can do so with the help of their Aadhaar cards. e-PAN will be issued immediately after the successful registration without any extra charges.
According to the provisions of the Income Tax Act of 1961, no individual is allowed to have more than one PAN card and if somebody has an extra or duplicate PAN card, they are legally required to inform the same to the Jurisdictional Assessing Officer and submit the extra PAN card to them.
If someone is found guilty of having more than one or duplicate PAN card, the Income Tax Department as per Section 272B of the Income Tax Act of 1961 has the right to impose a fine of up to Rs. 10,000. Therefore, if you have any extra or duplicate PAN cards, please report them to the authorities to avoid facing any legal repercussions.

PAN 2.0 aims to enhance the existing PAN & TAN services and it will only be able to do so by eliminating all the duplicate PAN cards for which the punishable measures have been established.
