The Jan Suraksha Schemes comprise three major schemes. i.e., the PM Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), PM Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), and Atal Pension Yojana (APY). All of them are briefly explained below for one’s reference.
The PM Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana was launched in the year 2015. The scheme aims to provide life insurance cover to people between the ages of 18-50 years, at an annual premium rate of Rs. 436. The PM Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) is oriented towards providing coverage for such unfortunate accidents resulting in death or disability and focuses on cost-effective operation. It is specifically for people between the ages of 18-70 years at an annual premium rate of Rs. 20. Under the scheme, Rs. 2 lakh is allotted for accidental death and Rs. 1 lakh for partial disability. As of April 2025, around 51 crore people have been made, out of which 23.87 crore are women and 17.12 crore are registered in the PM Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY).
The last scheme under the Jan Suraksha Schemes is the Atal Pension Yojana (APY), which aims to provide pensions to people above the age of 60 years. The amount of the pensions ranges from Rs. 1000 to Rs. 5000. As of April 2025, around 7.66 crore individuals have enrolled under the scheme.
The Finance Minister of India, Smt Nirmala Sitharaman, expressed that the Jan Suraksha Schemes were designed with one vision, and that was to ‘secure the unsecured’, and all the schemes covered under the Jan Suraksha have proven themselves to be exceptional and in alignment with the vision.
She also highlighted that over Rs. 18,397 crore has been invested for more than 9.19 lakh people under the PMJJBY scheme. On the other hand, the PMSBY scheme has paid around Rs. 3,121 crore to 1.57 lakh people. Digitisation has also played a key role in the success and improved working of the schemes for the people of India.
As the Jan Suraksha Schemes mark their 10th anniversary, let’s celebrate the combined efforts of the government and people in achieving this anniversary. It is not an occasion but a symbol of hard work put in by both the Indian government and the citizens of India.
