On 30th June 2024, a part of a hill behind Mundakkari in the district of Wayanad fell, resulting in multiple landslides. Around 2569 people were either injured or lost their lives due to this unfortunate natural calamity.
One of the additions to this year’s budget for Kerala is a separate fund for the rehabilitation project. Shri K.N. Balagopal announced the allocation of funds worth around 750 crore toward the rehabilitation project set up for the victims and survivors of the Wayanad landslides.
At the time, financial assistance was given to the survivors and their families but it was neither adequate nor justified which led to this decision taken by the state’s finance minister.
The Finance Minister of the state also announced a newly launched project called the K-Home Project. The project proposes to utilise unoccupied homes near major tourist hotspots and turn them into a place where tourists can stay.
The K-Home Project will work within a 10 km radius of popular tourist spots like Fort Kochi, Munnar, Kumarakom, and Kovalam.
This newly launched project has been allocated funds worth Rs. 5 crore and is reported to use 1.5 million unoccupied homes near major tourist hotspots.
The K-Home Project won’t only attract more tourism by making unoccupied homes available as stay options are budget-friendly for both, domestic and foreign tourists but also act as an extra source of income for the homeowners.
