Women face violence on a very regular basis, more than you think. And, it is a serious issue that affects thousands of women across India. According to a report by the National Crime Bureau, there were more than 4 lakh women who reported a case of violence against them. Violence against women comes in different forms, like domestic violence, sexual assault, honour killings, dowry-related abuse, acid attacks, and much more.
To tackle this, the Ministry of Women and Child Development launched the Sakhi One Stop Centre Scheme on April 1, 2015, to provide support for women against the violence that they face.
The main objective of the One Stop Centre Scheme is to provide different services to women who have been affected by violence under one roof for their own convenience. This includes:
Medical Aid
Counselling
Legal Assistance
Temporary Shelter
The scheme aims to provide immediate, but also non-emergency access to the services mentioned above.
The target group of the One Stop Centre Scheme is all women facing violence, irrespective of their class, religion, caste, marital status, or background, as it aims to provide assistance and safeguard all women who have been victims of acts of violence against them.
The One Stop Centre Scheme provides various critical services to help and aid women affected by violence. This includes:
Emergency response and rescue services through support from the police and ambulance services.
Medical assistance through referrals to nearby hospitals.
Legal aid and counselling are offered by selected lawyers from the District Legal Services Authority.
Temporary shelter for up to 5 days is provided at the centres.
Video conferencing facilities allow women to record statements for the police or courts from the safety of the centres themselves.
Women can access the services provided by the One Stop Centre Scheme by:
Visiting the centre directly or through the toll-free women’s helpline number.
Upon receiving a complaint, centres will generate a unique ID number and send SMS alerts to responsible authorities as per the detailed guidelines of the Sakhi One Stop Centre Scheme.
The One Stop Centre Scheme plays an important role in supporting women facing violence by providing all the needed assistance under one roof. Through its various services and the dedicated helpline, it aims to improve convenient and timely aid for women who face violence across the nation.
The helpline numbers along with the respected emails for your state, can be found in the official directory here.
