As India makes its way towards the online and digitised world, there are several new things entering people’s lives as well, and one of those things is obtaining Digital Signature Certificates (DSCs). The Digital Signature Certificate is a digital identity that is issued to people and organisations. The citizens and organisations of India need to possess a valid DSC in compliance with the tax laws.

One of the features of the DSCs is that they have a limited validity period and hence require regular updates, renewals, and changes. But these updates can only be done by people if they fulfil certain prerequisite conditions, and therefore, awareness is the first step to keep using digital services without any interruptions and within the boundaries of the law.

Read the article to learn more about the Digital Signature Certificate, ranging from its meaning and prerequisite conditions to benefits and the eMudhra Digital Signature renewal process, including information on Digital Signature renewal charges, more specifically, DSC renewal charges for 2 Years.

What Is A Digital Signature Certificate?

A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is an electronic form of identity which is issued by a licensed Certifying Authority to individuals or organisations in India. This electronic certificate is used not only to sign digital documents but also to carry out online transactions. DSC helps in verifying the identity of an individual or organisation and helps in ensuring that only authenticated people and organisations can enter the online world.

A Digital Signature Certificate comprises details, such as the individual’s name, email ID, public key, and the name of the issuing authority. It is like a normal traditional signature, but only in electronic form. DSCs are classified into different categories, like class 2 and class 3 (higher classes mean stronger security support).

Mandatory Conditions To Fulfil For DSC Change Or Renewal

There are some prerequisite conditions that people need to fulfil before applying for renewal or change of their respective Digital Signature Certificates. Those conditions are laid down below in brief points for one’s reference:

  • To successfully apply for renewal or a change in one’s DSC, please ensure that your system is equipped with the needed technical requirements, like compatible browsers and drivers. Download the current DSC and the DSC which needs to be changed on your system beforehand. Please note that at the time of renewal, one needs to obtain a DSC USB token. If a USB token was not used at the time of one’s DSC registration, it would be required while applying for renewal.

  • Individuals need to ensure that they apply for change or renewal in their respective DSCs with the same name mentioned in their present Digital Signature Certificate. Name change at the time of renewal is strictly prohibited; however, if one still wants to change their name, it won’t be considered a renewal but a fresh new application.

  • The only change that is allowed in the Digital Signature Certificate is the changing of one’s postal address and contact details.

  • Please ensure to start the Digital Signature renewal online process before 7 days before the expiry of the old DSC.

  • And lastly, while submitting the documents, ensure that all of them are valid to successfully apply for the renewal or change in the Digital Signature Certificate.
