The Semicon India Programme was launched on December 15, 2021. Its goal is to make India a global leader in semiconductor and display manufacturing. With the growing electronics market and rising demand for semiconductors, the government program aims to create a complete ecosystem for production. It offers large government incentives to companies involved in semiconductor packaging and design. This ensures India stays competitive in the high-tech industry.
The India Semicon program has greatly boosted the semiconductor industry. It has attracted large investments, created jobs, and encouraged innovation in control and package design. This is a tentative analysis of the program's impact.

The Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme has strengthened the electronics manufacturing capabilities of India.
Production Value: ₹6.14 lakh crore.
Exports: ₹3.12 lakh crore.
Job Creation: Over 1.28 lakh direct jobs are generated in electronics manufacturing.
The Ministry of Finance highlighted the role of Convergence, Communications, and Broadband Technologies (CC&BT). These technologies are crucial for achieving the vision of a developed India, or Viksit Bharat. These technologies will be critical in:
Developing India’s skilled technology workforce.
Increasing economic productivity.
Participating in the global supply and value chain of semiconductors and electronics.
Over the years, India’s dependence on imported semiconductors has increased which makes it critical to polish the existing semiconductor ecosystem indigenously. The Semicon India Programme not only helps fill this void but also enhances India’s participation in the international arena. In combination with the PLI scheme they:
Attract massive investments into India’s technology sector.
Help create millions of jobs for highly qualified people.
Increase India’s exports and contain the import bill.
These schemes also further India’s vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat – self-sufficient India – while aiding in the global supply chain contribution.
The Semicon India Programme and the PLI Scheme for Electronics, India is envisaged to be at the forefront of semiconductor and electronics manufacturing. Semicon Programme is likely to draw investments worth ₹1.52 lakh crore and address critical industry issues while creating 85,000 job opportunities, whereas the further strengthening of the PLI Scheme on electronics production and exports will bolster India’s position in global manufacturing.
