Banglar Bari scheme which was launched by the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is a Government sponsored scheme for providing housing to the rural poor people. This government scheme is an important move towards addressing rural housing issues as its first phase covers more than 12 lakh beneficiaries. This initiative is in the wake of the prolonged delay in the release of funds under the central schemes and signifies the advancement of the state government towards its rural masses.

What Is The Banglar Bari Scheme?

The Banglar Bari is a state-funded housing scheme set up to assist low-income rural households in West Bengal to build their own houses. The government yojana was started as a substitute for the PM Awas Yojana, as there were hold-ups in the disbursement of central funds.

  • Up to ₹1.20 lakh is provided to a family for the housing construction.

Phased Rollout:

  • The first Phase of implementation will have over 12 lakh beneficiaries in the phase.

  • In addition to that 18 lakh more beneficiaries will be targeted for inclusion by the year 2025.

Immediate Implementation:

  • Forwarding of the required amount of ₹60,000 as the first instalment.

  • 42 beneficiaries from 21 districts have already had funds disbursed to them.

Implementation And Impact

During its pilot phase, over 42 families were reached and this scheme aims to cover 18 lakh households by 2025. This scheme alleviates rural poverty by providing immediate funds while also constructing infrastructure in areas like Jangalmahal and Darjeeling hills which have enormous housing shortages.

Moreover, these schemes assist other schemes sponsored by the state like the replacement of MGNREGA, which has been functioning since 2021 and allows rural employment of 50 days in case of fund blockage.
