To date, girls are treated as a burden upon their births, especially by families who come from the vulnerable or economically backward section of society. To address such issues and to help in the growth of girl children, many government schemes are launched and the state government of Tamil Nadu launched the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Girl Child Protection Scheme.

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Girl Child Protection Scheme is a government initiative launched to improve the lives of girl children in the state. It was launched in 2011 and provides financial aid to families with girl children to promote their wholesome growth. The govt scheme aims to address and eliminate social issues and crimes like early marriages of girls, gender bias, etc.
The government scheme has several key objectives that outline its goals. The key objectives of the govt scheme are mentioned below:
Promote Education: Girls should be taken to school and should be retained at school at least up to the middle school level.
Prevent Child Marriage: Create campaigners and seek funds so that girls do not end up getting married before the age of 18.
Encourage Family Planning: Encourage families to abide by a certain set of family planning standards regarding children especially those with two girl children to control this.
Empowerment: Looking at these factors, enhance the social and economic opportunities of girls and defend their rights.
Change Mindsets: Encourage families to improve their attitude towards and support of girl children.

The child protection scheme offers financial deposits for girl children in two ways mentioned below in detail for one’s better understanding:
SCHEME 1
Those parents who are having one girl child born on or after August 1, 2011, should get a fixed deposit of ₹50,000 only.
This deposit will be in the form of interest-bearing bonds which will be floated through Tamil Nadu Power Finance and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited.
SCHEME 2
For those families who have two girls, they will be provided ₹ 25,000 each in the form of a fixed deposit for each child.
This amount shall be funded by Tamil Nadu Power Finance and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited.
The girl safety scheme provides several benefits to support girls and their education. The major benefits of the scheme are mentioned below in detail:
Annual Incentive: When they are six years of age, girls will be offered an incentive of ₹1,800 every year to enable them to fight the cost of education.
Renewal Every 5 Years: The State Government will reinstate the amount every five years to further continue with the support.
Interest Payout: Once the girl comes of age, 18 years, she will be able to get interest from the deposit to fund her higher education. For her to be in a position of being given this benefit, she has to be present for her 10th standard board exams.

There are various benefits of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Girl Child Protection Scheme. Some of the major benefits are:
Financial aid: The government scheme provides a fixed deposit of Rs. 50,000 to families with one girl child and Rs. 25,000 to families with two girl children.
Promotes education: The scheme promotes the education of girl children among families and aims to reduce the dropout rates of girls from schools.
Discourages early marriages: The scheme discourages the practice of early marriages of girl children and spreads awareness about the criminal act.
To qualify for the Chief Minister’s Girl Child Protection Scheme, the following criteria must be met to avoid rejection of applications for the government scheme:
Income Limit: The family’s annual income must be not more than ₹ 72,000 for any of the proposals.
No Boy Child: To be precise, the parents of the couple should not have any boy child.
Education: The girl has to be a school-going or college-going girl or else has to be associated with some school or any educational institution.
Unmarried: The girl should not be married.
Interested and eligible individuals can apply for the scheme by following the steps mentioned below in detail:
Step 1: Collect Documents: Compile all necessary documents that one requires to apply for the govt scheme.
Step 2: Visit CSC: Get down at the nearest CSC and do the Biometric verification process.
Step 3: Fill the Form: Complete the application form, and attach scanned copies of relevant documents where necessary.
Step 4: Get Receipt: Request for a receipt or an acknowledgement from the CSC. It should include features such as the date, time of submission, and an identification number if any.
Step 5: Deadline for Application: The application should be filed before the child is 3 years of age.
(Note: The parents or grandparents should have resided in Tamil Nadu where the applicant of this scheme resides for at least 10 years.)
