What Is The National Food Security Act?

The NFSA was introduced by the government of India in the year 2013. The NFSA full form is National Food Security Act, which has the purpose to ensure that no one in the country goes to sleep hungry and minimise the rate of malnutrition. Under the scheme, eligible people can purchase food grains at subsidised rates through the Public Distribution System (PDS).

What Are The Main Objectives Of The National Food Security Act?

The Food Security Act embodies several objectives. Some of the major objectives of the act are laid down below:

  • Under the act, eligible individuals can purchase 5 kg of food grains every month at a subsidised price of Rs. 3 for rice, Rs. 2 for wheat, and Rs. 1 for millets.

  • The National Food Security Act, 2013, covers around 75% of the rural population and 50% of the urban population.

  • NFSA aims to improve the nutritional status of the citizens of India, especially women and children.

Special Allowances Concerning Food And Women & Children

If an individual is eligible under the NFSA through the AAY program, they are entitled to receive 35 kg per month. The act also pays special attention to women, especially pregnant and lactating women, during and after the pregnancies for at least an additional period of 6 months. Children up to the age of 6 years can also enjoy the service of free meals, and children up to the age of 14 years can avail the benefits of the mid-day meal scheme.

What Is NFSA Gov In Ration Cards?

To avail the benefits that come under the National Food Security Act, 2013, beneficiaries are given a Ration card, which they can use at PDS to purchase food grains. The card’s major function is to prove the identity of a beneficiary so that only registered individuals can reap the benefits offered under the act.

Who Are The Beneficiaries Under TPDS?

The class of beneficiaries under the Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS) who can apply for the NFSA Ration card is of three major types:

What Are The Required Documents To Apply For The NFSA Ration Card?

BPLRs. 43 crore35 kg

Impact Of NFSA

Since 2013, the National Food Security Act has proven itself to be exceptional for the citizens of India. Its progress and impact are written in brief points for one’s reference:

  • According to an official report, the act has helped around 80% of people as per the Socio-Economic and Caste Census (SECC), 2011.

  • The Food Security Act has dramatically reduced the rate of malnutrition, especially among women and children.

  • As the prices to purchase food grains are subsidised, it makes it extremely convenient for the people to access food from the PDS.

What Are The Challenges Of NFSA?

Like every other government scheme and act, the National Food Security Act, 2013 faces some challenges that hinder its implementation, such as:

  • Even though the central government allocates around 2.5 trillion in NFSA, it is still not adequate. The act requires much more budgetary allowance to strengthen its components, such as the system of PDS.

  • There are many impostors enrolled as beneficiaries in NFSA with their NFSA Ration card, because of which many real eligible people fail to get registered under the act. This is one of the major reasons why the act faces issues in the proper identification of the target population.

  • Another key challenge of the Food Security Act is the quality and variety of food grains distributed through the Public Distribution System.

How Can The Challenges Faced By NFSA Be Resolved?

The challenges of NFSA can be resolved through various measures. Some of those are mentioned below:

  • The government can begin by working on updating the data in the SECC 2011 in reasonable time gaps to make the identification process accurate.

  • The system can be fully digitised to remove any middlemen to minimise the rate of malpractices like corruption, duplicate cards, etc.

  • The government should also focus on increasing the quality and variety of food grains distributed through PDS so that people get maximum nutrients.

Conclusion

The National Food Security Act, launched back in 2013, has changed the landscape of India and has served the role of a knight for people who belong to the low-income groups. We urge and request you to educate yourself about NFSA and apply if eligible. Let the government make your lives healthy and a bit easier.
