It has been found that over the years NHAI has been instrumental in enhancing the road infrastructure of the country which aids in the growth of the economy. Apart from the focus on enhancing mobile connectivity, one of the accomplishments of DoT is the Electronic Toll Collection System namely; FASTags. At toll plazas, FASTag has impacted toll collection as it has made them faster, eliminated large congregations of vehicles and ensured that roads become more enjoyable.

NHAI divides national highways with the help of importance and traffic flow on that highway. For instance, NH 1 is one of the oldest and most busy starting from Delhi to Amritsar. Other large motorways are NH - 2 (Delhi to Kolkata), NH - 7 (Varanasi to Kanyakumari), and NH -8 (Delhi to Mumbai).
There are still problems with diluted traffic conditions, road maintenance and requirements for the construction and improvement of existing roads in India.
A major programme of the government of India is the Bharatmala Pariyojana which is meant for enhancement of road connectivity. In this regard, the highways authority intends to undertake over 34,800 km of highways that fall under economic corridors, feeder routes and border roads. Not only do they add connections but also they provide employment opportunities and play a role in the development of regions.

The NHAI was conferred in the year 1988 under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Its major functions entail the coordination of the construction and maintenance of national highways. An important development through which NHAI has delivered is the implementation of FASTag, an electronic toll system. With the help of the FASTag, the payments of tolls have become faster and more efficient, there is no congestion at the toll plaza and travel is convenient.
National highways link the major urban centres, seaports and most important economic centres and for this reason, it can be regarded as the strategic roads of India.
