Since Covid is no longer considered a pandemic, the Employee Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has decided to discontinue COVID-19 advances to members. EPF account holders can still withdraw the existing funds for various purposes. Let’s find out how.
What Was The COVID-19 Advance Facility?
In March 2020, when the Covid outbreak took place, the government decided to give aid to small businesses that were facing a shortage of funds. The government also decided to pay the employer and the employee to help them. This advance was known as the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana (PMGKY). Under PMGKY they could only withdraw once.
During the second wave of the Covid pandemic, the Labour Ministry decided to provide another advance. This policy was introduced to further provide support to employees and employers who were facing a cash crunch.

Purpose Of The COVID-19 Advance Facility
The COVID-19 advance facility was a critical measure taken by the government to help and give financial support to individuals and families.
The primary aim was to provide immediate financial assistance to employees by letting them withdraw a portion of their EPF to meet their daily needs during the pandemic.
This facility is a non-refundable advance. So, unlike loans, employees did not have to pay the amount withdrawn.

Discontinuation Of The Facility
“As COVID-19 is no more a pandemic, the competent authority has decided to discontinue the said advance with immediate effect. This will be applicable to the exempted trusts also and accordingly may be intimated to all the Trusts coming under your respective jurisdictions,” the EPFO said.
The EPFO has said that members can still withdraw funds from their accounts for specific purposes only.

Eligibility Criteria For Withdrawal Of EPF Now
The EPF has made it clear that the COVID-19 advance facility will be discontinued, but members can still withdraw money from their accounts in some special situations.
The specific criteria are
- Purchase and construction of a house or a flat.
- Purpose of marriage of self/daughter/son/brother/sister.
- Medical-related expenses.
- Expenses arose during the event of a natural calamity.
- Purchase of necessary equipment for one’s physical disability.
- Partial withdrawal before retirement.
- For investing in the Varishtha Pension Bima Yojana.

How To Apply For EPFO Claim Online?
- Visit the official UAN portal.
- Login using UAN and password.
- Select the ‘manage’ tab and choose ‘KYC’ from the list.
- Click ‘online services’ and select ‘Claim (Form- 31,19, and 10D).
- Verify KYC and other necessary details.
- Select ‘Yes’ to proceed.
- Click the ‘Proceed for Online Claim’.
- Specify the type of claim to file under ‘I want to apply for’.
- Upload all documents and submit them.
