The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has rolled out a new policy to eliminate 'loose FASTags' - tags which are not firmly fastened onto the windshields - due to escalating fraud and delay concerns. Toll booth operators will immediately be mandated to report 'loose FASTags' at the toll booth, which will automatically launch a blacklisting process to protect the integrity of the electronic toll collection (ETC) system, as well as the smooth travel of law-abiding customers.
As part of its implementation of Moving/Multipoint and Real Time Free Flow (MLFF) and its rollout of Annual FASTag passes on 15 August, it became necessary for the NHAI to remove any imperfections in system operation. Effective and automatic blacklisting of improperly used FASTags will not only provide legitimate users with a dependable system but will also minimise lane hiccups while driving a more compliant user experience.

The new policy will be implemented in a very consistent manner throughout the country with specific action steps and explicit responsibilities for toll operators. The following is a description of how the real-time blacklisting process will work in the real world.
Enforcement will be applied, and technology enabled:
Once a toll operator observes a loose FASTag, they will email the details of the loose FASTag every time to NHAI-central servers.
NHAI will blacklist or hotlist the particular FASTag as soon as it receives the request, blocking access to highways.
A parallel process of data-sharing ensures blacklisted FASTags are acknowledged across the country.
The authorities will let you know when vehicles are failing to use functioning FASTags, and non-compliance will not go unnoticed. Vehicles that use malfunctioning FASTags will face punishment and restricted access to the highway. Below are all the ways that vehicle owners need to be mindful of the possible punishment.
Automatic block of toll payments.
No access to national highways.
Potential disputes at the toll booth if detected while entering the Annual Pass or MLFF.
Swift actions are anticipated, so adhering to the voluntary initiative will help avoid potential inconveniences.
Because of the immense scale and scope of FASTag use in India, time and commitment were spent to develop a secure and unbranded system to share reliable data about FASTag and to make FASTag use fraud-free. These statistics are helpful to clarify the intentions and urgency behind this latest effort to enforce compliance.
FASTag has led the way in transforming toll payments in India, with over 98% national highway implementation.
Annual toll revenues collected from highways are approximately ₹60,000 crore, up from ₹55,882 crore in 2023-24. Reasons for stricter controls that will protect this financial ecosystem.

To be compliant, toll operators, and avoid punishment, vehicle owners need to understand that compliance is based on certain principles and they need to have the understanding and tools to demonstrate their compliance. Here are most of the key takeaways.
Placement of the tag matters: Be sure to place your FASTag properly in the designated location on the windscreen.
Annual FASTag Pass: Annual tag - purchase ₹3,000, valid commencing 15 August onwards for one year and includes up to 200 trips.
Digital tolling upgrades: This crackdown is paving the way for an increase in the rollout of an MLFF tolling system across the country.
The NHAI's crackdown on 'loose FASTags' is a decisive initial step to solidifying tolling infrastructure and establishing the reliability of India's ETC system. As India heads towards Annual Passes and an MLFF strategy, drivers need to remember to engage in compliant behaviour to avoid being blacklisted and to help ensure hassle-free travel. Placement of your FASTag securely today means you will have less hassle and smoother travel tomorrow.
