The Chief Minister of Odisha, Shri Mohan Majhi, recently addressed a national workshop in Bhubaneswar, where he announced that the state is working on launching several welfare schemes for the state's sanitation workers. The primary objective of the welfare schemes is to enhance the lives of sanitation workers in the state of Odisha.
Read the article to learn more about the to-be-launched welfare schemes and major details about the same.
Odisha’s Chief Minister, Shri Mohan Majhi, recently announced at a national workshop on ‘Transforming Core Sanitation Work: Safety, Dignity, & Inclusion’ held at the Lokseva Bhavan Convention Centre in the city of Bhubaneshwar that the state will be launching various welfare schemes for sanitation workers working across the state.
Various other ministers like Amit Yadav, Secretary in the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, and Manvita Baradi, Founder-Director of the Urban Management Centre.
Some major details about the to-be-launched welfare schemes are laid out below in detailed points for one’s better understanding and reference:
One of the welfare schemes will provide health insurance coverage worth 10 lakh and Rs. 30 lakh as compensation for accidental deaths to core sanitation workers. Core sanitation workers are those who work in septic and sewage cleaning services in various urban areas.
Welfare schemes would also work in collaboration with various government schemes, such as the PM Awas Yojana Urban (PMAY-U), under which the beneficiaries of the scheme can take the government’s help in the construction of their houses.
The CM of Odisha also highlighted the fact that one of the social welfare schemes, called the Garima scheme, has proven itself to be a boon for sanitation workers as it has helped more than 10,000 sanitation workers across 115 urban local bodies as skilled and high-skilled workers.
The state will also be creating an organised method to identify the sanitation workers so that the implementation of the schemes and benefits can be given to the right people and not impostors.
The state govt of Odisha will also create and launch welfare schemes which will provide various services and amenities to the sanitation workers, such as safety equipment, skill development programs, etc.
Shri Mohan Majhi has also organised a 15-day cleanliness drive starting from August 15th to August 30th. This is being organised to expand the boundaries of sanitation programs and encourage the citizens to help in cleaning the city, as it is not just the responsibility of sanitation workers but all of ours.
The state govt of Odisha’s decision to launch various welfare schemes for sanitation workers is one of the most exceptional steps taken by the authorities. Sanitation workers are an integral part of a country’s development, who keep the environment clean and pleasant as it should be. However, their profession is considered taboo and not very well respected by the other citizens. With this article, we also request you to keep an open mind and respect the sanitation workers around you, as without them, the economy will not only stop functioning well but also won’t flourish!
