government schemes for farmers

Agriculture continues to be one of the major livelihood sources in India; however, farmers struggle with significant issues including fluctuating weather, high input expenditure, crop losses, and restricted access to formal credit and market dynamics. In response, the government has launched several schemes across the farming value chain, from production to irrigation, insurance, credit, storage, and marketing.

These programmes are still aimed at enhancing farmers’ income, mitigating production risks and promoting modern and sustainable farming systems in 2026. The support is directed not only towards incomes and institutional credit, but also crop insurance, soil testing, micro-irrigation, organic agriculture, and markets for digital agriculture, of which are not limited.

The scale of these programmes has also increased over the years. In this article, you will get detailed information about the key government schemes for farmers, their features and how to apply for them.

Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi

The financial support of the agriculturist assembling families is directly provided by the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN). Under the scheme, eligible beneficiaries receive ₹6,000 every year in three equal instalments of ₹2,000, with the money transferred directly to their registered bank accounts.

The scheme became operational on 1 December 2018 and has become an important source of short-term financial support for farmers. As for future access to the benefits, the latest official data indicates that the 23rd instalment was issued on 20 June 2026, with e-KYC for registered beneficiaries also requiring them to verify their identities.

This is also extended for the years 2026-27 to 2030-31, with a massive budget providing direct farmer income support.

Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana

Crop loss caused by drought, floods, cyclones, pests, diseases and other notified risks can seriously affect a farmer's income. To mitigate the financial losses arising out of diverse crop-related risks, Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana offers insurance cover.

The programme will cover notified food crops, as well as oilseeds and certain commercial as well as horticultural crops suitable for the season and according to state-level notification. It also provides provisions for certain pre-sowing, localised and post-harvest risks.

Coverage has expanded. Since its launch in 2016–17, more than 92.46 crore farmer applications have been insured. As of December 2025, disbursements reached approximately ₹1.96 lakh crore for approximately 24.31 crore farmers. More recent government information says that claims exceeding ₹2.06 lakh crore had been paid on more than 26.33 crore farmer applications up to Rabi 2025–26.

The scheme has also lately been integrating technology to benefit crop yield assessment and claim settlement.

Kisan Credit Card

The Kisan Credit Card scheme enables farmers to avail institutional credit on a time-bound basis for agricultural and allied requirements. The eligible farmers can take loans for cultivation purposes, post-harvest activity, and various other permissible agricultural activities as opposed to fully depending on informal means of borrowing.

The credit framework has grown in many ways. On 3 August 2026, 7.28 crore Kisan Credit Card accounts were operating under an outstanding credit of about ₹10.08 lakh crore.

The loan amount available to farmers under the interest-support system was similarly raised from ₹3 lakh to ₹5 lakh per farmer, increasing the working capital available to eligible farmers.

Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana

Water has a direct effect on agricultural productivity, especially in heavily rainfall-reliant areas. The Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana is about expanding irrigation coverage, enhancing water-use efficiency and better management of available water resources.

It integrates irrigation development and efficient use of irrigation water at the farm level. Micro-irrigation methods such as drip and sprinkler systems can help farmers deliver water closer to the crop root zone and reduce unnecessary water use. The broader goal is to manage water more dependably and to ensure that more water is put to productive use with the water available.

Per Drop More Crop

Per Drop More Crop is a programme that specifically targets water-use efficiency using micro-irrigation. The use of drip and sprinkler systems can help to conserve water and allow farmers to control irrigation more accurately.

The programme is especially relevant to crops for which controlled irrigation can help increase productivity and lower irrigation expenses. Financial support is available as per norms depending on farmer classification and implementation at the farmer state level.

The programme is also not a limited irrigation intervention but has been integrated into the overall agricultural development agenda.

Soil Health Card Scheme

Soil quality directly impacts crop yield, fertiliser needs, and the sustainability of the farm or enterprise. The Soil Health Card Scheme helps farmers understand the nutrient condition of their soil and make more informed decisions about fertiliser and nutrient application.

Instead of applying inputs without knowing the actual nutrient requirements, farmers can use soil-test-based recommendations to manage nutrients more efficiently.

It is a large-scale programme. As of July 2026, the government has issued over 26.09 crore soil health cards. It has long-lasting effects, as balanced nutrient management can help soil to maintain fertility over time.

Pradhan Mantri Kisan Maandhan Yojana

Farming income can fluctuate significantly because of weather, crop prices and production conditions. PM-KMY has demonstrated a different pathway towards addressing farmers' welfare by putting in place a contributory pension scheme for eligible small and marginal farmers.

The farmers who participate in the scheme pay based on the age-specific contribution rates, and the government pays them in line with the scheme design. Once eligible, an individual can get a fixed payment for ₹3000 per month after complying with the terms and conditions and reaching the prescribed age.

A total of 24.96 lakh farmers were already registered under the scheme by February 2026. The programme thus helps complement income generation and crop support schemes, and centres on financial security in the long run.

Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana

Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (Crop Horticulture Development Scheme) encourages farmers to shift their practices from chemical-heavy agriculture to sustainable methods, thereby encouraging organic farming.

The programme is based on a cluster approach offering support for organic cultivation, certification, capacity building and marketing. This can be one step towards encouraging farmers to embrace production systems that prioritise soil health and ecological sustainability.

The programme has grown significantly in size. Till June 2026, approximately 18.93 lakh hectares were planned, and approximately 33.63 lakh farmers received their benefits. Other potential sources of differentiated products are available under organic farming conditions, provided that the farmer will have appropriate market opportunities and certification.

National Rural Development Programme - Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana

Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana's flexibility in addressing the priorities of every state enables agricultural development. Whereas the implementation of the programme is done at the country level and may differ from one country to another, it can draw on various project implementation options corresponding to different agricultural regions depending on the local production conditions and development needs.

The Programme may assist in areas of infrastructure, agricultural development, innovation, and productivity improvement. A number of interventions in agriculture have also been incorporated into the overall remodelled framework as a means to help establish a more coordinated set of approaches to the development of the farm sector.

The goal doesn't just have to be a productivity boost. It also emphasises the facilitation of conditions that can make agriculture a better investment, diversify and entice farmers to earn more.

Electronic National Agriculture Market

Electronic National Agriculture Market is an electronic-based structure of Agriculture marketing and Price discovery. It links, in an electronic system, between the markets and allows buyers and sellers to use information about the market and avail of trading opportunities.

However, farmers can enjoy increased transparency of prices and market arrival information, and digital processes can be a better way of doing agricultural trading.

Agriculture Infrastructure Fund

Agricultural production can be adversely affected by post-harvest losses after a farmer has succeeded in harvesting a crop. To tackle these needs, the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund will invest in the development and enhancement of agricultural infrastructure.

This may include the construction of material warehouses, material cold storage, processing and production facilities, sorting and grading facilities, and other post-production facilities that meet the requirements for eligible projects.

The fund is noteworthy in particular because facilities for better storage and processing can make it possible to curb wastage by the farmer/agricultural enterprise, assure increased quality and possibly, increased value for products.

Sub Mission On Agricultural Mechanisation

Mechanisation may lessen reliance on labour, boost productivity and enable farmers to carry out labour-intensive tasks more efficiently. The agricultural mechanisation programme provides for the implementation and broader use of agricultural equipment, using measures that are relevant.

Equipment support can be provided at various cultivation phases, depending on the cultivation scheme component and implementation. Alternative hiring may also enable smaller farmers to access machines without having to buy all the equipment themselves. The overall goal is to ensure that modern farm technology becomes more available, enhance productivity, and reduce the cost of operation.

National Mission On Sustainable Agriculture

Sustainable farming is becoming increasingly important in the face of climate variability. Actions under the sustainable agriculture dimension provide incentives for farmers to become more efficient in using resources, managing their land, conserving water and adapting to quickly varying climate.

Integrated farming systems, good nutrient management practices, soil conservation and cultivation in response to climate change can mitigate risks for farmers facing extreme events, such as natural resource scarcity. These are very beneficial when applied in conjunction with crop insurance, irrigation support and scientific soil management.

National Food Security And Nutrition Mission

The National Food Security and Nutrition Mission focuses on improving the production and productivity of important food crops while supporting food and nutritional security.

Its scope has evolved to include crops beyond the original focus areas, including pulses, coarse cereals and nutri-cereals. The approach combines productivity enhancement with improved agricultural practices, quality inputs and farmer capacity building.

Sustainable productivity matters even more with the looming challenge for the nation to sustain its food needs with the finite availability of land and water resources.

National Mission On Edible Oils

Another significant topic of the agricultural policies is the production of edible oil, as there is a strong demand for it that should be matched by domestic production. The programmes of the two national initiatives on oilseeds and oil palm are aimed at increasing cultivation, boosting yields and enhancing the domestic edible-oil landscape.

Support can focus on better planting material, cultivation practices, infrastructure and value-chain development, depending on the specific programme. If matched to local conditions and market demand, diversification of farmers into suitable oilseed crops may offer an additional income stream.

Mission Organic Value Chain Development For The North Eastern Region

The Mission Organic Value Chain Development for the North Eastern Region promotes organic farming along with the development of a complete value chain from production to marketing.

The main focus is aggregating, processing, certifying, and linking to market, in addition to organic cultivation. The strategy can help farmers to transcend production and join the higher-value part of the agricultural marketplace.

Around 2.74 lakh farmers have benefited from bringing 2.36 lakh hectares under organic farming through the programme as of June 2026.

National Bamboo Mission

Bamboo can provide farmers with an additional agricultural and livelihood opportunity, particularly where agro-climatic conditions are suitable. The National Bamboo Mission supports the development of bamboo cultivation and related value chains.

The goal is wider-ranging and seeks to enhance productivity and spur value addition and market opportunities for bamboo products. The endeavour is especially interesting in relation to farm diversification, even though bamboo can be part of a long-term plantation and agroforestry-based income strategy.

Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha Evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan

Energy costs are an important consideration for farmers who rely on irrigation pumps and other agricultural equipment. The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan promotes the use of solar energy in agriculture.

The programme works with components for decentralised generation of solar power, solarisation of agricultural feeders and solar-powered agricultural pumps, when applicable.

Solar energy can alleviate reliance on other fuel/energy resources and, under providing circumstances, generate extra income from power generation.

How Farmers Can Access Government Schemes?

The eligibility, documents, application procedure and payment rates differ for each scheme, so the farmer needs to identify the right scheme for the requirement. Some schemes are accessed via ports, and others via banks, state departments or local agricultural authorities.

Farmers should ensure all basic records are up to date and check specific requirements for their state and category.

Conclusion

The government programmes for the farmers of 2026 are much more than just about financial aid. Income support through PM-KISAN, protection through crop insurance, affordable credit through KCC, irrigation assistance, soil testing, organic farming, mechanisation, digital markets and agricultural infrastructure collectively address different challenges faced by farmers.

The current statistics bear witness to this kind of support. As of August 2026, 7.28 crore Kisan Credit Card Accounts were active and established, over 92.46 crore farmer applications were taken up in the crop insurance programme, and PM-KISAN has been dispensing ₹6,000 annually to eligible farmer households ever since.

Farmers must not simply presume that all schemes are automatically available to them. However, requirements may differ from time to time, and applicants are advised to carefully read the updated official provisions before applying.
