The Begum Hazrat Mahal National Scholarship Scheme, which started off in 2003, focuses on supporting academically bright girls belonging to minority communities to continue and complete their education.

The scholarship was previously known as the Maulana Azad National Scholarship but had its name changed to the Begum Hazrat Mahal National Scholarship in 2024. But even with the change in its name, it has been helping minority students for well over two decades.

Objectives Of The Begum Hazrat Mahal National Scholarship

A few of the objectives of the Begum Hazrat Mahal Nation Scholarship Scheme are:

  • To identify and encourage academically excellent girls belonging to minority communities.
  • To provide assistance to both academically gifted and financially challenged girls who cannot afford further education but want to do so.
  • To promote higher secondary education completion rates among minorities.

Eligibility Criteria For The Begum Hazrat Mahal National Scholarship

To be eligible for the Begum Hazrat Mahal National Scholarship, these are the criteria:

  • Applicants must be female and also be a part of the six minority communities that India officially recognises, which are:
  1. Muslims
  2. Sikhs
  3. Christians
  4. Buddhists
  5. Jains
  6. Parsis
  • Applicants must be enrolled in classes 9–12 and have secured at least a minimum of 50% marks in the previous class they were in.
  • Applicants' annual parental income must be less than that of Rs. 2 lakhs and must not exceed that.

Benefits Of The Begum Hazrat Mahal National Scholarship Scheme

The benefits of the scheme, which provide assistance to the students, are:

  • A scholarship amount of Rs. 5,000 is provided for Classes 9–10, and Rs. 6,000 is provided for Classes 11–12.
  • Financial assistance is provided academically to be used for school fees, books, stationery, and also for their lodging if the student stays away from home.

Application Process For The Begum Hazrat Mahal National Scholarship Scheme

To apply for this scheme, one has to:

  • Visit the Maulana Azad Education Foundation website.
  • Required documents must be uploaded, such as a school verification form with the principal's signature along with the school’s stamp.
  • A valid and proper income certificate from reliable authorities also needs to be uploaded.
  • Once all of this has been done, the applicant will be under processing and, if admitted under this scheme, will be notified through the proper channels.
